Old Historical Mill at Portarlington

So many times I have driven past this highly intriguing building tucked away from the main streets, and wondered what it would be like inside. The perfect opportunity came up when I was informed by a good friend that she had her art on display at the current Art Show, so the decision was made to visit on that particular weekend.

Upon arriving all I could do was admire this four storey sandstone building that stood before me, under a magnificent blue sky, with lush green gardens and the most amazing golden-leaf tree beside it.

The volunteers that greeted us once we entered were extremely welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, sharing with us some of their key information on this splendid structure, oozing with history, and whispers of the years gone by.

The Old Mill at Portarlington was built in the early 1850’s from sandstone, which was then carved from the nearby cliffs and designed by architect Andrew McWilliams, and was the second flour mill to open on the Bellarine Peninsula.

The mill was used to make flour from crops grown throughout the Bellarine Peninsula in what was a booming business due to the huge number of people coming to Victoria around this time joining the Gold Rush. The nearby port provided easy access to ship flour out of the township. The mill was in-fact the second mill to open on the Bellarine, an earlier mill opened a few years earlier in Drysdale, unfortunately this mill burnt to the ground in 1861.

The Mill was only just saved from demolition in the year 1962 when the then owner, Mrs. Dye, was served with a Housing Commission notice to demolish the 105 year old building (at the time), condemned as unfit for habitation.  Thankfully, the local council stepped in and purchased the property in 1970.

In 1977, the Portarlington Mill was transferred to the National Trust. It has since been restored, and is currently run as a Museum by a dedicated group of volunteers.

Photograph from 1857 taken looking out to sea.

The mill’s interior features a trove of interesting artefacts, many dating back to the time of the mill. The student desk brought back many childhood memories for me, as not only did I sit on these at school, I also had one at home.

There are displays on how the flour was produced, and many items giving us a great insight as to how life was lived back then.
Inside the building, you will see several intriguing and interesting photographs of the mill and Portarlington in the 19th century which we found fascinating.
The mill also features heritage from the Portarlington port, including many pieces of memorabilia from the historic steamship the Edina which brought so many visitors and holiday makers to Portarlington before sailing on her last voyage back in 1938.

This building is a perfect fit for displaying Art.
A beautiful blend of Old and New... Experiencing a wonderful insight of the building's early and in full swing historical years, and then seeing a lovely display of local scenes and talented artists with the old feel architecture and vibe.

So the question we all seek the answer to is: "Was there any paranormal activity?"
On the day, we heard floors creaking, saw several black crows, and had some unexpected glows in some of the building's external photos. Paranormal or not? You decide.

Passionate and Creative Local Artist - Antoinette Inguanti

Have you had a chance to stop in at any of the Art Display locations when the Annual Bellarine Arts Trail is on? Even though it was on at a few popular Bellarine locations, we opted to visit Queenscliff and see some of the fabulous local Art talent.

It was wonderful having a nice long chat to passionate local artist Antoinette Inguanti, who felt both honoured and excited to be exhibiting at this event.
A little about Antoinette's story continued below...

Antoinette started to enjoy art as a child. It helped her gain confidence at school as she states she was an "extremely shy child".
According to Antoinette, years went by and there was no time for art due to working, marrying, home duties and starting a family. To have time to do art was a luxury which she sadly could not afford at that time!
Once her children required less of her time she re-started her passion for painting with different mediums.
For Antoinette, to engage in art  and being creative is a means of therapeutic relaxation. It takes her to different places, immerses her in nature and is sometimes very spiritually rewarding.

Antoinette has recently discovered resin art. When working with resin, she is on a time frame, as it is a medium which cures quite rapidly! - "It controls you"!
Antoinette's love of the ocean certainly influences her preferences of what to paint,  but then again her vast life experiences and memorable travels around the world also are portrayed in some of her works.
Antoinette also enjoys life drawing and the beautiful and mysterious human body.

Antoinette has also recently discovered another technique which is a lot of fun and quite addictive. "It’s so different from oils, watercolours, pastels or other traditional art", she states.  It is Acrylic pouring art. According to Antoinette, this method and medium is very much in control of the artist and not the other way around for a change ....."It’s serendipity!"

Antoinette has also displayed her beautiful works at the Old Portarlington Historical Mill, where the U3A Art Group display their Annual achievements.

Lions Port Market at Portarlington

First of all I would like to Congratulate the new team - Lions International for volunteering to take on such a huge task to keep the Portarlington Community market going, hence the new name: Lions Port Market.

Like many people on the Bellarine, my family and I decided to pay a visit to their first market by way of showing our support to this event, the organisers and the local community.

Although overcast, there was a great number of people when we turned up around mid-morning.
You could feel the Community vibe, and I also happened to hear whispers from several visitors that they had come to show their support.

What better location, than at the W.G. Little Reserve. Once there, you can view the beautiful township on one side, and our most fabulous port and pier, with stunning water views on the other! Plus a playground for the kids.

Perfect family day out...
With a vast selection of stalls, friendly community, selection of food and coffee, a visit to the market could very easily be added to your agenda for the day, followed by a walk on our popular Portarlington pier, surrounded by all the beauty that nature has to offer.

Melbourne visitors? Too easy! Why not take the Port Phillip Ferry from Docklands to Portarlington return trip, and make it a Splendid Day Out without the stress of driving...

*Lions Port Market is on the last Sunday of every month, between September - May each year at W.G. Little Reserve - Newcombe Street, Portarlington.

My Majestic Hawk

A lovely day strolling casually down at the Clifton Springs jetty, hardly anyone around, nice soft breeze and beautiful clear blue skies... another blissful day in paradise @Life On The Bellarine!

In the distance I noticed a small bird sitting on the rocks. I had no idea what type of bird it was, as it was too far away to identify. Out came my trusty Nikon Coolpix camera with incredible zoom capacity, and I was in awe with what I saw! Standing there so peacefully, gazing out to the waters was the most Majestic Hawk I have ever seen!
I didn't want to scare it off, as here and now was my opportunity to attempt some photos.
Each step forward that I took, I captured him in a photo, since I was worried he would see me coming closer and fly away!
Another step closer - another photo! And another! And another! This went on for a while... more than 20 steps and I was getting closer. I knew I had reached my limits when he kept looking at me, so there and then I took plenty photos and hoped for the best!

Playing back the photos I was immensely surprised! Here I was with a new camera, learning how to use it, and the photos were stunning!! It felt so good! It re-affirmed my passion for photography and my love for all the beauty that surrounds me.

Here is one of my favourite images of "My Hawk" looking at me somewhat approvingly don't you agree?

I'm loving and appreciating all the wonderful feedback and support - Thank-you.

Off we go to the Drysdale Community Market

Overcast day with visitors staying over from Melbourne...
The question for the day was: "What shall we do Today?...
Perfect timing as the Drysdale Community market happened to be on that day.

Do I have to go? Says Master 10 and Mr 25! Do I have to go? Says Hubby rolling his eyes.
Come on let's go says Miss 8.
Despite some opposition, we all got into our 7 seater, and made our way to the market.

Parking was not a problem, as we parked on the side closest to the lake.
Everyone was getting enthused immediately!
Hubby was planning to take a walk and explore the lake for the very first time! The kids were excitedly talking about doughnuts and having fun at the playground. It was great to see everyone bubbly and cheerful.

Strolling through the market, the ambience was wonderful with a local community vibe.

Situated under gorgeous lush trees, light celestino music playing, delicious food smells in the air, and a lovely selection of diverse stalls.

I highly recommend it whether you are looking to visit on your own, with friends, or with family.

*Drysdale Community Market is on the 3rd Sunday of the month, from October - May each year at Drysdale Recreation Reserve, and is the major fundraising effort of Drysdale Primary School.
